A group of inventive boys in Mammoth Falls stumbles into an unexpected adventure when Dinky Poore spins a tall tale about a sea monster in Strawberry Lake. To cover his late return home, he embellishes a simple sighting into a fantastical creature, sparking townwide excitement. The Mad Scientists' Club—led by Henry Mulligan’s brainstorming and Jeff Crocker’s practical skills—decides to capitalize on the frenzy. They construct a convincing, canvas-and-chicken-wire monster attached to a canoe, complete with blinking red eyes and a splashy tail, to play along with the growing legend and satisfy the town’s curiosity.

The club’s harmless hoax quickly spirals into a local phenomenon, drawing crowds, boosting business, and even attracting out-of-town hunters armed with elephant guns. Facing a real threat to their creation, the boys devise a clever solution: they retrofit the monster with a radio-controlled motor, allowing them to steer it from a hidden hillside while the beast dodges bullets and amplifies its own legend. As the town buzzes with tales of the speeding, bellowing creature, the club’s blend of mischief and ingenuity ensures their hoax remains safely afloat.
